Fantasy Fest dominates Key West & The FL Keys calendar of special events... but it isn't the only party on the island!
10. Sit on Smathers Beach
Key West isn’t exactly known for its beaches, which comes as a surprise to many tourists. But, if your vacation isn’t complete without a day sitting in the sun then visit Smathers Beach. This half-mile stretch of man-made sand is one of Key West’s few public beaches.
9. Take in History at the Hemingway House and Museum
August already on The Isle of Bones. Watch out walking through asphalt parking lots… you could fry out there. But, so far... not one chance for the news to start banging a drum and sending us to crowded grocery stores for peanut butter and batteries. I kind of miss it, really.
Rising temperatures in the island city aren't always a meteorological condition. Instead, they could be a response to Tropical Heat, a long weekend of gay and lesbian adult fun designed to tickle the fancy and stimulate the senses...so to speak!
Conceived by the Key West Business Guild, the United States' oldest gay-oriented business organization, Tropical Heat is a collaborative showcase for the island city's most in-demand gay and lesbian bars and clubs. Its schedule features 10 events over a four-day period -- each offering a different type of lightheartedly decadent adult fun.
Anglers can target the "big three" game fish of the flats while fishing with celebrities ranging from sports heroes to astronauts in the annual Mercury Southernmost Light-Tackle Anglers Masters (S.L.A.M.) celebrity fishing tournament. The catch-and-release event pits participating anglers against tarpon, permit and bonefish. Catching all three on the same day is known as a "flats grand slam."
